I’ve said this in several comments but today’s the day to put it in a headline. Mike Pence is a friggin’ hero. An actual living, breathing Profile in Courage. He may have single-handedly saved the republic.
Like most of you I can’t stand so many things about Mike Pence especially his insatiable drive to increase religion’s role in society to the detriment of the LGBTQ community, women and, heck, pretty much everyone.
Still, as unexpected as it is, the former VP showed not just political but physical courage. Imagine any of the other stooges Trump could have picked as VP — Chris Christie comes to mind — standing up to the withering pressure Trump & Co. laid on Pence. There is a good chance that the “Green Bay Sweep” would have worked or, at the very least, thrown the country into open warfare against our far better armed batshit crazy yahoo adversaries.
My guess is that the “Hang Mike Pence” noose and chants were cleverly designed to get him to leave the Capitol so good ol’ Charles Grassley could grab a bat and pinch hit smashing our democracy to pieces. Pence understood that if he got in that car in the loading dock he wasn’t going to make it back to count the votes.
Mike Pence, I salute you. And let’s add Liz Cheney, Brad Raffensberger and a few dozen others that have made a difference. As I continue to fight against your policies I will try to keep in mind that even the most virulent opponent has the ability to do the right thing. It’s something to build on as we try to break the fever and undo the damage that Donald Trump has done to our country.
